1 Timothy 4:14-16
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message
when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these
matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your
progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them,
because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
Sadly, a
believer's passion to serve the Lord and share the gospel sometimes fades.
When this happens, some choose to settle for a lukewarm life. They neither
risk much for His name nor receive many blessings. Others stop ministering
to others altogether and drift aimlessly through life. But the wise choice
is to rekindle the flame of passion that first was lit when we received
salvation.
When we were
saved, we received the gift of the Holy Spirit, our Helper in life and
ministry. But wrong choices and poor priorities can hinder His power in
our life. If that happens, how can we renew our passion for God?
The first
step is to pray for the Holy Spirit to fill and control us again. That
requires self-examination and repentance of any sins that the Lord brings
to mind. It also means giving back to God our desires and wanting Him to
take His rightful place and to reign over every aspect of our lives.
Also we need
to think carefully about what was and what wasn't happening in life when
our passion last burned brightly. Understanding how external pressures and
activities affected our lives and walk with God, helps us to see the
dangers, understand what tempts us and to know how we can act more wisely
in the future.
But most
important of all is to retreat from other activities and devote time every
day to focus on the Lord in prayer and meditation on His Word. It’s good
to recall His words of encouragement from Isaiah
41:10 - So do not fear, for I am with
you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help
you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. In that way,
we can resist fixating on our problems and find strength to resist
temptation. Instead, it's important to remember that He'll shepherd us
through any trial. The more we focus on God, the smaller our distractions
and stress will seem.
We don't
need to settle for a lukewarm life. The passion we experienced at
salvation can be ours again if we'll fix our focus on the Lord and seek to
walk in close obedience to Him.
